Sonnet Saturday

Today I leave you with twisted, beautiful words of E.E. Cummings.

"Dive for Dreams"

dive for dreams
or a slogan may topple you
(trees are their roots
and wind is wind)
trust your heart
if the seas catch fire
(and live by love
though the stars walk backward)
honour the past
but welcome the future
(and dance your death
away at this wedding)
never mind a world
with its villains or heroes
(for god likes girls
and tomorrow and the earth)

peace and blessings,

Out of my Comfort Zone

Y'all know that I love just about every part of being a teacher even if I am just currently a substitute teacher. I have subbed a few times at the local elementary but yesterday was a whole new world literally. I got roped into subbing for half day Kindergarten. Oh  MY GOODNESS I have no idea how all of you sweet Kindergarten teachers out there handle that kind of chaos everyday.  I often think that high schooler's are rowdy and uncontrollable but these precious little ones were almost too much for me to handle.  Simple tasks like reading them stories, coloring pictures, or lining up for snack cause a million and twelve questions to be asked and often tears to be shed.  I received so many wonderful hugs and silly hand drawn pictures that ended up making the day worth it in the long run.  Whew lets just say I do not plan on picking up an early childhood endorsements in the future.  I do believe it was blessing in disguise -- because even though I left extremely exhausted and with a the worst teacher headache that no amount of Diet Coke (liquid of the gods) could cure my heart was just as happy as when I walk out of any other classroom. I never dreamed that I would gain so much happiness through my career but I am so blessed to have chosen this crazy, awesome, and often exasperating profession.

Do you love your job? What makes your heart the happiest?

Peace and Blessings,

What a Weekend

This past weekend was more fun than I ever imagined it could possibly be! We left on Friday and made our to Colombia,  Missouri, home of the University of Missouri to attend the Mizzou v. Alabama football game.  Upon arrival we dropped our belongings off with Chevy Girl at her adorable house and proceeded to get dinner. After dinner we headed out to Whiskey Wild's Saloon to watch get some cheeeeappp drinks, watch the Cardinals win, and be sure to scream Roll Tide Roll during the pauses in Sweet Home Alabama.  We were extremely successful at all three of those things.  Upon arrival at Chevy Girl's abode we promptly crashed and went to sleep. When we woke up it was game day and time to get ready for a good time.  Our little group was filled with the worst morning people ever so I'm sure you can imagine how that went.  Anyway, we made it to the tailgate which was right outside the stadium because Meredith's Uncle is AWESOME. I wasn't able to meet up with any of the friends and family that I hoped too but I did have a blast all day long even though it was pouring down rain and we were little soaked all the way through.  After the game (RTR) we headed to a local Italian restaurant and then onto the piano bar.  Shortly after we headed home to crash.  It was a great trip and I had the most fun.  It was exactly the kind of weekend I needed.  The only downside is that due to the bad weather conditions there are no photos except one drowned rat photo that I'll spare y'all the viewing pleasure of.

Peace and Blessings,

kjo

FOOTBALL FRIDAY

Woo... it is finally Friday and boy has it been a busy week.  I subbed everyday and worked at Not Starbucks two nights in a row and boy am I exhausted.  I was so excited to sleep in today because in a few shorts hours I am departing to head to MIZZOU to see the ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE defeat the Tigers.  Cash Money, Future Senator, and Cash Money's hs friend Meredith, are making the journey to COMO and I could not be any more excited.  I hope to see several family members as well as include a long over due five year reunion with Muh Boo, and hopefully get some hoe-down throwdown action in with Vandyloo. I am the MOST excited to reunite with my girl, Chevy Girl, and crash at her lovely little apt, it has been waaaaaaaaaaauy to long since I have seen that girl! So I cannot wait to get back to y'all and keep you updated on my crazy adventures, but I have to admit I think I mostly excited to be off work totally for the first time in 17 days AND to play college!

Peace and Blessings,

kjo

Here is to you World Travler

I want every to picture late August of 2007, some of us were beginning our senior years of high school and for others they would soon be jet setting off into the wide world of college.  If you were a precious innocent late 1989 baby like I was you were about to begin Senior Year.  However, if you were a late 1988 baby like my best friend World Traveler, you were about to begin the epic journey known as college. I was fortunate enough to spend most a large chunk of high school being best friends with Red, Chicago, Mugen, and World Traveler. We were literally the best friends anyone could ever ask for.

Here we are at various events: a homecoming, a winter formal, and a birthday bonfire.  We did everything together.  Let us fast forward to these lovely ladies senior year of high school 2006-2007, World Traveler and I became literally attached at the hip. There was very few hours of the day that we did not spend together.  Here are some beautiful action shots of our mayhem.

Fast forward to World Traveler departing to being her college career at Loyola University Chicago, I was one hot mess. I cried for three straight days and I think I might have been so hysterical that I lost ten pounds and got sent home from school one day.  It was a rough start to my senior year and an interesting semester as I learned to deal with my best friend in the entire world being over six hours away.  Y'all might be wondering why this story is relevant to this day and age? Well tonight I said good bye to World Traveler as she is about to embark on six monthish backing pack trip to New Zeland.  While I am glad to stay I am perfectly emotionally stable I am a little sad to lose her out of my routine back at home.  So here is to you World Traveler, I wish all the best adventure in love and luck, and safe travels filled with never ending laughter and joy everyday you are gone. I will be ready to eat the Dale when you return.  So much love!

Peace and Blessings,

kjo

PS Thank Goodness these girls were around the first time World  Traveler jet setted and that they are still around today                                            \

Earring Swap!

Hey Pretty Girls,
Sorry this is a day late but I have been super busy between subbing at the High School the past three days and then working a few closing shifts at Not Starbucks so blogging as had to take a backseat for the time being.  HOWEVER, I am so excited to share with y'all the absolutely fantastic experience I had participating in the The Preppy Student's Earring Swap! I received the two of the most adorable pair of Charming Charlie's steal from Kristin over at Everyday With A Redhead! They are absolutely adorable and I have found several ways to wear them already! (I rocked the red pair for 'Merica Monday during Spirit Week at the High School).  I was also fortunate enough to pick out an adorable pair of pearl bow earrings for Jessica over at Preppin' Postgrad! This was my first swap and I am so glad that I participated because I scored some super cute earrings, increased the amount of fabulous ladies checking out my blog, and made some sweet new friends. What kind of swaps have you participated in?

Peace and Blessings,
kjo

PS here are the sweet action shots of my new earrings! (sorry for the poor quality photo's I am still rocking a crackberry and my camera cord is missing!)

Music Monday

Hey Y'all,
oh goodness do I have so much to say but for now I am pretty exhausted *more on that later* BUT I will leave you with a little video of my newest obsession.  American Aquarium... I heard them a long time ago but due to an impromptu road trip this past weekend the fire was lit.  So here we go with the sing of the band BJ Barham singing "Coffee and Cigarettes" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udp-GAzsTcI! Look forward to a very exciting week here at a Pearl Kind of Girl.

Seriously?!?!?!? Sunday.

Well the title of this blog came from a serious flaw in the one and only goddess of fashion's fall line. That is right ladies I have found a SERIOUS flaw in the fall Lily line.  The Tusk in the Sun print is literal perfection for so many reasons except that the color scheme is seriously flawed.  Any self respecting Alabama fan would be absolutely ga ga for a Lilly print that is dedicated (not entirely but close enough) to Big Al, but there is just one problem it is navy and orange. Auburn colors don't exactly spell R-T-R.  However, after much consideration I will still attempt to secure a piece of Tusk in the Sun because how could I not pay homage to the GOP.

What Lilly prints do you think miss the mark?

The Lion King

The Lion King is not only the world's greatest movie ( well I might be a little biased as it is in my top 5), but it comes with a lot of great lessons to learn.  Some of the hardest lessons to learn are taught in the Lion King like this one:

What have you learned from the Lion King?

Tattoos on the Heart: Not a book review

I know I blog a lot about Pinterest, but I do learn a significant amount of crafty to-do's and recipe's from the wonderful world of Pinterest. Today I stumbled across a young lady who had her father's last written words tattooed on her arm.  I have never thought I would get a tattoo anywhere on body, what could I possibly feel  so strongly about to never change to put on my body? My father's last written  words to me. Now I just have sort through birthday cards and inscriptions to find something readable because Daddy had the worst handwriting.  Now I just need to figure out what phrase and where it should go.

What kind of meaningful tattoos are y'all interested in?

Peace and Blessings,
kjo

An open letter to my North Face Rain jacket

Dear North Face Rain Jacket,
I know we have been through some really rough times together; Mobile could not have been easy on you. I mean it rained sometimes everyday for literally weeks on end.  If you ever felt abused you should know that it was all out of love and severe necessity you were paired with all of my outfits. Now that I have moved back to the midwest you seem to have gone AWHOL, which was fine all summer because we were having a drought. But, now it is fall and it is starting to rain again and I desperately need you to show yourself.  I really do love you, and I hope you'll take me back.
Love to the Moon and Back,
kjo

What kind of rain jacket do you use to keep dry?

Sonnet Sunday

Okay so I lied last week its Sonnet Sunday this week again too. So much time spent at Not Starbucks so little time spend on a Pearl Kind of Girl. For those of you who do not know me on a fairly personal level you'll quickly learn that a good motto or deep quote really gets me going.  Men and women for others, the Jesuit motto reallllly gets me going having attended a Jesuit college.  I truly believe that we all should dedicate some part of our selves to helping others because I mean lets get real it makes you feel super good and you're doing something stellar for the rest of the population. Or another example being the motto of Tri Delta, Let Us Steadfastly Love One Another, a motto that I sought to live out everyday in college-- no matter how difficult was at sometimes I truly sought out to steadfastly love not just my sister but everyone everyday. The point to this ramble, I love words and the meanings that we can convey with words.  However, finding the perfect words to explain a thought or feeling is often difficult so thank goodness lots of awe inspiring people have said some extremely moving things like these:

i love this quote.

swoon worthy.

classy.

and a shamless plug for my boys #realchange2012

Happy Fun Notes

First things first, I have possibly the world's worst handwriting.  Which can pose many problems throughout my daily life which include but are not limited to: Writing on the Chalkboard ( I am a teacher), writing to-do lists for myself, writing a note as a form of communication or lastly writing a to a loved one.  I absolutely love getting and sending snail mail.  I think this love probably stems from the vast amount of years I spent living at summer camp dying to receive mail everyday from the outside world. This sick obsession with snail mail has continued throughout college and now into post grad life! The dollar bin at Target is major feeding ground for my addiction.  I can pick up a pack of 8 note cards and pick 8 friends to drop a happy fun note to! It is the perfect pick me up to my day and to the individual receiving the happy fun note! Plus they have the most adorable note cards ever.  However, I am totally open to suggestions of places to pick some more adult like note cards. The moral of the moral of the story? I love to send and receive Happy Fun Notes, so if you're friends with me always be a little on the look out for a brightly colored envelope from me to you.

Peace and Blessings,
kjo

How much do you love snail mail?

The Rest is Still Unwritten.

The rest of our lives are unwritten stories that could fill pages and pages of an empty journal.  A typical day could be mundane, thrilling, or sometimes downright horrifying but at the end of the day something has been accomplished.  Thankfully we have 365 days each year  to make memories, both spectacular and awful; to go on successful adventures -- or adventures that cause nothing but hilarious memories.  To make these goals a reality, we often devise a bucket list: a list of goals and dream to be achieved before we get the bucket. Ever since the invention of Pinterest I have been keeping track oaf some of my more adventurous  plans via my Pinboard so cleverly entitled The Rest is Still Unwritten, not just because it was the theme song to the Hills but because really and truly the rest is still unwritten. Here are some of the feats that I hope to accomplish in the next 80ish years of my life, some are outlandish and extremely lofty while others are incredibly simple or easily attainable :
1.Backpack Europe
2.Visit Lake Retba in Senegal
3.Go camping at Lake Martin in Alabama
4. Go back to Uganda
5.Get a small tattoo that means a lot
6. Live in Belize for an extended period of time
7. Create a secret family recipe
8. Visit the Narrows in Texas
9.Have my children grow up as Harry Potter nerds
10.Visit South Africa
11. Have a closet full of shoes
12. Stand with one foot on either side of equator
13.Stop biting my nails... repentantly
14.Own a beach house
15.Hold a baby panda
16. visit New Zeland
17. try pasta and pizza in Italy
18.walk on the Great Wall of China
19.Own a pair of Louboutains
20. Go to Fiji
21. Best my best friend's Maid of Honor
22. Kiss on top of a Ferris Wheel
23. Watch the Ball drop in Times Square
24. Go to Carlos Bakery
25.Swim with dolphins
26. Visit Denali
27. Visit every United State
28. Be in two places at once.
29. Go to Greece.
30. Go on an Africa Safari.
31. To set foot on all seven continents
32.Visit auschwitz.
33. Visit the Louvre.
34. Have my favorite author sign my favorite book
35. Teach in the inner city
36. Be voted Teacher of the Year every year of my career.
37. Visit the Lover's Bridge
38. Make a wish at the Trevi Fountain
39. Visit Austria's Green Lake
40. Watch a baseball game in every National League stadium
41.. Attend a football game in every SEC stadium and the Southern ACC stadiums

that is what I have for now, what's on your bucket list?

Manicure Monday

As I have mentioned before painting my nails and nail polish take top priority on my obsession list.  It is the perfect little reward to myself for accomplishing something or really just to make a bad day better. Over the years I have amassed quite the collection ranging from drugstores deals to high end salon quality brands. Well I ventured into Walgreens the other day in hopes of finding the new Essie fall colors because Head Mistress and Recessionista have been calling my name. However, much to my dismay this particular location did not have the Fall 2012 colors.  I did finally bite the bullet and get Essie's Cute as Button which I have been postponing all summer! I was practicing some restraint because I have a coral color but I have convinced myself that it is too orange and that Cute as a Button is practically perfect in every way.

I was also able to score a major deal on some Sinful Color, color's for the fall. Sinful Colors is available only at Walgreens to my knowledge (correct me if I am wrong!) and is one of the best discount brands I have found.  The packaging is similar to OPI and the color spectrum is much like Essie, OPI, and ChinaGlaze. Sinful Color's are normal a $1.99 which make them the ultimate pick me when I am a little down but I have learned this summer that they frequently go on sale for a mere  $.99! I have always been interested in darker shades for fall and winter and now that I am living back in a seasonal climate this should be much easier! I picked up three daring shades out of my comfort zone to try out! At .99 I figured what could go wrong! So I picked up Black on Black, Hot Spot, and Last Chance!

Preach on Sister Friend.

Oh goodness! I have no idea how it has ended up being Sunday already! It seems like last week just flew by! I suppose that is what happens when I clock in so many hours at Not Starbucks. Since I cannot keep track of my days I have missed several of my days of the week themed posts this week as well as updating y'alll on any of the happenings of my life.  Well I plan to reconcile this in two ways. 1. Today you are going to get a pseudo version of Sonnet Saturday and 2. Not much new is going on.  There are a few things that are a bit exciting in the upcoming future but I don't want to jinx my chances!

So I will leave with some wise words from my Preach on Sister Friend Pinterest page.

Monday.

Well kiddo's it is the last Monday of August... where has the time gone? I've been diligently working on some extra special blog posts to entertain y'all but I have been spending SO SO much time at Not Starbucks that I have barely had time to do anything else! While I was lazing around today and keeping up with my Bible Quote of the Day App, I read this little scripture gem and wanted to share with y'all!

From Thessalonians 5: 16-18:
Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing.  Give thanks in everything. For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for all of you.

It just seemed so fitting in this time of transition most of us big kid jobless post grad's are feeling.

What keeps you sane in this post grad job hunt?

Sonnet Saturday

There are a lot of theme day of the week postings out there on the blogsphere. Today I am hoping to create my own with Sonnet Saturday.  A tribute to the often misunderstood and frequently neglected world of poetry.  This first post is not exactly a poem but in the same genre.  It is a love written written by Johnny Cash to his beloved wife, June.  I have been thinking a lot about life and love lately and I just love Johnny and June. So without further ramblings here is the first Sonnet Saturday post!

This is what it says: Hey June,

That's really nice June. You've got a way with words and a way with me as well.

The fire and excitement may be gone now that we don't go out there and sing them anymore, but the ring of fire still burns around you and I, keeping our love hotter than a pepper sprout.

This is what this one says:THINGS TO DO TODAY!

1. Not smoke
2. Kiss June
3. Not kiss anyone else
4. Cough
5. Pee
6. Eat
7. Not eat too much
8. Worry
9. Go see Mama
10. Practice Piano

NOTES: Not write notes

Who are some of your favorite lovebirds?

Peace and Blessings,
kjo

True to Tri Delt

As many of you may know I spent my college years reppin the Silver, Gold, and Blue as a member of Delta Delta Delta. You might also be aware that I have a large obsession with frozen dairy products: fro-yo, ice cream, sorbet, sherbet, snoballs, the likes I love them all. My obsession tends to get a bit out of control when I am stressed, bored, or really anytime I eat a meal ;). This problem was miraculously solved when Badgerland College installed a soft-serve ice cream machine in the Caf.... woah dawg it got a little out of control.

One night while eating dinner with my extended Delta family it occurred to Sassy Sister that the machine was broken and what were we to do for our ice cream? So I suggested Sassy Sister and I hit up the froyo place after Chapter because really what else is there to do after chapter? ( certainly not homework) Thus began a month long love affair of dairy dates with Sassy Sister, which led to the pass down of a seriously sassy leopard print letter shirt that I loved dearly.

Sassy Sister!
Yesterday, I was dying for some delicious frozen treats and asked almost everyone I know to go to a look cool spot for some treats however everyone was busy :( So just for old time sake I text messaged Sassy Sister and explained my dilemma to her. In response I received this lovely little photo message:

I was obviously shocked to receive this message and found out that Sassy Sister had just pulled into her local fro-yo shop as I texted her! What a coincidence! Just goes to show true minds think a like or that sisters really like fro-yo!

Peace and Blessings,
kjo
